New HSK 1 Vocabulary Overview — A Complete Beginner Guide (500 Words Explained)

Written from the perspective of a self-taught Chinese learner.

Learning Chinese can be a breeze when you have a clear roadmap to follow! New HSK 1 has 500 core words that are essential for every beginner to master before moving on to more advanced levels. When I started learning Chinese on my own, I started with New HSK 1 vocabulary. That helped me so much! I could finally understand simple conversations, read basic sentences, and feel more confident.

In this guide, you’ll discover the vocabulary from the HSK 1 list, learn how to learn it most effectively, and find the categories that are best for you. I’ll also share the study techniques I used as a self-learner to help you memorize all 500 words without feeling overwhelmed.

What is New HSK 1?

The New HSK 1 is the beginner level of the updated HSK exam system (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi), a standardized Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. This updated version, also known as HSK 3.0, was introduced in 2021 and is a significant improvement over the previous six-level system.

The New HSK 1 has much higher requirements than the old HSK 1. Learners are now expected to build a stronger foundation before moving on to higher levels. To pass the New HSK 1 test, you need to show that you can do several things:

  • Vocabulary: 500 common words (compared to 150 in the old HSK 1).
  • Characters: Learn 300 Chinese characters.
  • Handwriting: Write 100 basic characters by hand, making sure that each stroke is in the right place.
  • Grammar: Learn and use 48 basic grammar rules.
  • Topics: You will be able to talk about personal information, daily routines, food, transportation, and hobbies.
  • Speaking/Listening: You can understand short conversations when the speaker speaks slowly and clearly. You can also ask and answer simple questions.

HSK 1 Vocabulary Categories

To make learning easier, the 500words are grouped into practical categories.

Here’s the complete structure you will study in upcoming lessons:

How to learn HSK 1 vocabulary effectively (my personal tips)

As someone who has taught myself, here are the techniques that helped me the most:

1. Study by category (not alphabetically!)

Your brain learns faster when words are grouped by topic.

2. Use spaced repetition (SRS).

App and web Notion can help me memorize faster and forget slower.

Notion flashcard for learning

3. Start building sentences right away.

Even simple sentences like:

I’m going to school. I go to school.

我正在上学。 (Wǒ zhèngzài shàngxué.) 我上学。 (Wǒ shàngxué.)

He drank water. He drinks water.

他喝水了。 (Tā hē shuǐ le.) 他喝水。 (Tā hē shuǐ.)

This helps you understand things more quickly.

4. Practice with short conversations

Real-life usage sticks better than isolated vocabulary lists.

5. Set aside 10 minutes every day to review.

It’s better to take short, regular breaks during the day than to try to fit in a long, tiring session in one go.
